Confined Space Information

FAQs

A confined space is an area that is large enough for a person to enter and perform work but has limited or restricted means of entry or exit and is not designed for continuous human occupancy.

A PRCS meets all the criteria of a confined space but also has one or more of the following additional hazards:

  • Hazardous Atmosphere – Contains or has the potential to contain hazardous gases, low oxygen, or flammable vapors.
  • Engulfment Hazard – Risk of being buried or suffocated by loose materials (e.g., grain, sand, water).
  • Entrapment/Configuration Hazard – Space has inwardly converging walls or sloping floors that could trap or asphyxiate someone.
  • Other Serious Safety Hazards – Presence of unguarded machinery, exposed live wires, extreme temperatures, etc.

Today’s modern confined space drone platforms actually provide vastly superior results to traditional inspections, and they do it without subjecting humans to risk. For most jobs we use the Elios 3 by Flyability which is considered the "gold standard" in our industry. It is equipped with its own LED’s for up to 16,000 lumens of lighting, 4K camera for video and stills, thermal camera, and LiDAR.

Our services are almost always less expensive, and sometimes dramatically so. Substantial savings come from eliminating the need for scaffolding and confined space rescue teams. But usually the most significant savings comes from the reduced downtime of your valuable asset provided by the quick deployment and turnaround for a drone-based inspection.

While to some this might sound like a silly question, the drone industry has a lot of hype and pretenders. Many websites advertise services that they are not prepared to provide, and after receiving an inquiry for those services, they go out and try to find someone to “sub it out” to. CSDI Group uses our own team of pilots and platforms.

CSDI Group’s past clients include State and Municipal Agencies, military-related entities, and large multinational engineering companies, and these clients demand quality insurance coverage. We carry 3 separate policies for $1 million of coverage for General Liability, Professional Liability, and an Umbrella policy, and will provide a COI for contracted services upon request.

Our pilots and spotters are FAA part 107 certified. Additionally, our employees have many other safety certifications from OSHA and MSHA.

While located in North Carolina, CSDI Group has performed work all across the United States. Although we have not yet been contracted outside the USA, CSDI Group is prepared and willing to travel anywhere to assist our clients.

While CSDI Group specializes in confined space drone inspections, we have plenty of experience with outdoor drone inspections, and provide services that include commercial roof inspections, solar array inspections, and photogrammetry.
